Sivalinga has been a target for people who are religious fanatics and anti-hindus. They never try to see it with a hindu mindset atleast as a objective person. It seems 100 years back they read some rubbish in Paris religious conferrence some papers on linga. Swami Vivekananda then participating in it replied them that it is the post used for tieing the animal which is used to perform the ritual. The "Avudai" is the "Vedi". (please go through Swami vivekananda's Paris speech).

Some people fold their hands to express their good morning. Others kiss. Some others hug... These are all expressions of our feelings in a outward form. We hoist our flog to pay homage to our nation. This is called ritual. We have rituals in every occassion when we start olymbic games, or taking ministerial posts, or celebrating anyting...

LINGA means symbol not any other meaning. It is a samskrit word which means through which one come to know.

In samskrit grammar it is used with male, female and neuter gender in a sense to mean gender. So it is clear it is not a male word as in the case of breast or pregnant or nun...

One may argue that even cross convey the same vulgur idea. Or a Hindu may say it is a line art of sivalinga.

A deep study of Symbols and Worship may help one to understand it better otherwise he will end up in saying 'The king/ Queen is holding the staff for some other reason. We will discuss more.

Sivalingam:-

The Lingam implies the formlessness of God. It consists three parts namely the ‘Linga part’, the ‘Avudai part’, and the ‘Gomukhi Shakthi and Gomukhi part symbolizes Grace. Our parents have given birth to us. Similarly, Shiva and Shakthi are the parents of this universe. They have created this universe.
